TFJ has selected some of its favourite looks from the Oscars to share with you…What do you think?
Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace:
A great frock for Jolie to wear to the Oscars. While the split is a little shocking [as is the strong pose she's paired with it], it makes the gown what it is and for Jolie, it’s a winner.
Jessica Chastain in Alexander McQueen:
A gorgeous gown featuring gold embroidery and a train. True Hollywood glamour fit for the prestigious occasion.
Ellie Kemper in Armani Prive:
This has got to be one of TFJ’s favourite frocks from the red carpet. If it weren’t for the metallics, this dress may be a little plain, but it’s a bold frock that stands out and is super flattering on Kemper.
Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton:
This coral coloured frock is just gorgeous on Williams! The peplum adds a feminine touch and the patterned fabric helps make this dress the eye opener that it is. And the understated jewellery is the perfect match for this look. Love!
Kristen Wiig in J. Mendel:
A beautiful, feminine gown that looks fantastic on Wiig. While it almost blends in with her skin, she pulls it off and makes it work!
Tina Fey in Carolina Herrera:
A simple gown for a simple lady. The peplum helps dress up the look and the colour suits her perfectly. But then again when does Fey, or for that matter, Carolina Herrera, ever get it wrong? Love the up-do too, perfect for this look!
Cameron Diaz in Gucci:
A gorgeous gown for a gorgeous lady. While it’s not too over the top, the bottom of the gown makes the dress pop and the frocks’ body-con approach shows off all of Diaz’s good bits [not that she has any bad bits...].
Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford:
Amazing. Minimalism in its chicest form, accompanied by a trendsetting cape. Paltrow looks like a true goddess here and her simple cuff and sleek up-do give this look even more of a ‘wow!’ factor.
Milla Jovovich in Ellie Saab Couture:
This one shoulder gown looks phenomenal on Jovovich. The diamond accessories and red lip add to this beautiful look and help make the actress look even more divine than usual.
Rose Byrne in Vivienne Westwood:
A fantastic frock for the Aussie beauty. This black, sparkling gown makes Byrne look fierce and her drop earrings and sharp bob make her look all the more glamorous. Love this!!
With all the great frocks that float along the red carpet, there’s always a few misses. It’s hard to know who to feel bad for in these situations. Do you pity the actor wearing the frock, the designer who made it, or the stylist who agreed to dress their client in it? Whom ever you choose to blame, it’s always fun to first revel in the disappointment. Here are a few of TFJ’s picks for worst dressed…and be prepared, you will shed a tear for each of these wonderfully talented actresses.
Melissa McCarthy in Marina Rinaldi:
For one moment, let us ignore the fact that McCarthy is considered plus-sized and focus merely on the dress. Unflattering pleating cascades down the length of the gown as crystals cinch the frock in directly under the bust and sleeves billow in the wind. The choice of colour also adds to the chaos as a hue that most would have trouble pulling off. Now pair this with McCarthy’s ‘plus-sized’ figure and the whole look just implodes and gives us this:
We’ll call it a ‘Designer Fail’.
Emma Stone in Giambattista Valli:
By far not the worst of the worst dressed. In fact, this frock has potential and the only thing that killed the look was the giant red bow that threatened to engulf Stone’s head. It is the saddest thing when one of the lovelier actors ends up in one of the more horrid gowns. But how on earth could her stylist have let this happen?
We’ll call this a ‘Stylist Fail’.
Meryl Streep in Lanvin:
How can anyone dislike Streep? And how can anyone dislike Lanvin? But, how on earth did this happen?! The idea is sound, a beautiful, Grecian, draped gown that cascades to the floor in gorgeous gold lamé. While the idea sounds just amazing, in theory, it looks like King Midas just vomited on one of the greatest actresses of all time. We’re so sorry Lanvin and Meryl, we really wish this had worked! *Cry*
We’ll call this a ‘Stylist/Designer/Actress Fail’.
So there you have it, TFJ’s Oscars wrap up for 2012! What did you think? Were there any other looks you feel deserved to be on the best or worst dressed lists?
